Miami’s tech ecosystem is flourishing as local entrepreneurs, startups, and founders continue to innovate and others flock to the Southeast. What was considered a trend in 2020 is no longer a moment in tech; it is a movement.

Update: We recently interviewed many of the influencers driving the movement – including Mayor Francis Suarez of Miami and Mayor Daniella Levine Cava of Miami-Dade County. Check out the videos here.

Local tech and innovation journalism is growing along with the region’s ecosystem. Most recently, Axios Local announced that it will launch a Miami newsletter on August 15, authored by Miami-based reporters Deirdra Funcheon and Martin Vassolo!

Deidra has expertise in investigative and long-form journalism with work seen in the Miami Herald, Politico, and more. Martin joins Axios after four years as one of the Miami Herald reporters, covering local government, politics and community news.

The community of Miami tech reporters spotlights homegrown talent and identifies growing companies within our sector. That includes coverage of Carve clients like hybrid venture capital fund and angel investor network Florida Funders (recognized as the top VC in the Southeast region), next-generation hospitality brand Sextant Stays, and home improvement delivery platform, iDrop

If your tech business is looking to grow Awareness, Authority, Activation, and Engagement in South Florida, here are some Miami tech reporters you should know:

Miami Reporters and Tech Reporters to Know

Ashley Portero

Portero covers everything from the growing tech and innovation scene, established companies expanding into Miami, entrepreneurs, and fundings impacting the region at the South Florida Business Journal and Miami Inno. I can always count on her expert grasp of the local tech scene to tell a story that speaks to a broad audience.

Check out Portero's coverage on South Florida’s record-breaking venture capital funding featuring our client Florida Funders, here.

Nancy Dahlberg

Known as the “Godmother of Miami Tech,” Dahlberg currently writes for Refresh Miami, the hub of Miami Tech with a mission to educate, inspire, connect and grow South Florida’s startup ecosystem. She is prominent in the local community and shares her insights on the market and tips on approaching her with pitches at events. (You can catch her knowledge in our #MiamiTech videos, too!). At Carve, Dahlberg has been my go-to for telling our clients’ growth stories and delivers an occasional LOL during our exchanges. She’s also eager for the scoop and proactively reaches out in search of a good story. I appreciate that!

Check out Dahlberg’s coverage of our client Florida Funders’ investment into a Miami-based startup here.

Riley Kaminer

Kaminer is a freelance tech writer and researcher, who contributes to Refresh Miami and South Florida Tech Hub. He covers the South Florida tech scene including startup moves, funding rounds, captivating founder stories and more. If there’s a local tech event, make sure to invite him. He loves to be on the ground interacting with people face-to-face.

Check out Kaminer’s coverage of our client iDrop’s launch in Miami here.

Michael Butler

Butler is a reporter with the Miami Herald. While his contributions tend to primarily surround real estate and business, he’s known to have covered Miami tech topics before. When Florida International University and Blockchain.com teamed up to prepare students for jobs in the tech industry, Butler wrote that story. Who knows? Pitching him a great tech story might just be your “in” for other opportunities.

Check out Butler’s coverage of Black Feature Weekend here.

These reporters are seeding a local community of entrepreneurs, startups and founders through their content. Before you reach out, know their angles. Follow their coverage and social media feeds to keep up with everything you need to know about Miami’s innovation and tech hub.

If you’re interested in getting involved with our growing community, then join us, eMerge Americas and Florida Funders on November 30, 2022 for the second annual La Casa. It’s a gathering of the innovators, creators, investors, and entrepreneurs who have made the South Florida scene what it is and will shape its future.
